Sooji Porridge/Sooji Kheer/Suji Rava/sooji ki Kheer/Suji Kheer for Babies -Sooji/Rava/Semolina is an easily digestible food for babies, and it is preferred as the first food for babies in northern parts of India. Rava can be introduced to the baby from 6 months. This sooji porridge is similar to the sooji kheer recipe, minus adding dry fruits or nuts. My baby liked this porridge much more than any other one when she was little. It tastes so delicious. I had the privilege to enjoy her leftovers, if any:) Check more information on introducing and selecting sooji for babies here.
Now, let's check how to make a sooji porridge/sooji kheer recipe for babies.
Sooji Porridge Recipe for babies | Sooji Kheer for Babies | Baby Foods
Ingredients
- Roasted fine rava/sooji - 1.5 tbsp
- Powdered jaggery - 1.5 tbsp optional
- Homemade Ghee - ½ tsp
- Hot Water - ½ cup
- Cows milk - 1 cup don't add for babies under one year
Instructions
Preparation
- Sterilize the bowls and spoons used for feeding your baby in a vessel with hot water for five minutes and keep it immersed in the same vessel until use.
- Boil cows milk (if using) in a saucepan and keeps it ready. If using jaggery with impurities, Add ¼ cup of water to the powdered jaggery and boil in a separate vessel until it melts completely. Then filter out the jaggery water using a strainer in the saucepan
Method
- Take 2 tablespoon of roasted sooji in a saucepan to add the required amount of hot water and ghee to the sooji and mix everything slowly with a whisk. Make sure that there are no lumps formed. Cook the sooji in medium flame until the rava cooked completely.
- Stir it continuously while cooking otherwise porridge may stick to the vessel. Then add powdered organic jaggery/filtered jaggery water to the cooked sooji. Cook it further for 3 minutes or until it is thick and switch off the flame once done. The porridge becomes thick after cooling down. So switch off the flame accordingly.
- Once the porridge/kheer is warm, Add a cup of Warm boiled cow's milk/formula milk/breast milk to the cooked sooji. (Skip adding milk if you are preparing this porridge for a baby under one year ).

Yummy sooji porridge/sooji kheer is ready to feed your baby.
Notes :
- Skip cow's milk if your baby is under a year old.
- Generally, rava doesn't cause any allergies, but check for symptoms and stop feeding your baby if you find any.
- Always check with your pediatrician before introducing any new food.
- I use 24 mantra organic jaggery powder for my baby porridges.
- The rava porridge becomes too thick when cooled down. So please switch off the flame when it is a little watery.
- If your baby doesn't like the texture of rava, make it to a powder by grinding it in a blender.
- Offer this porridge plain when you start. Try to avoid jaggery/ palm sugar/ palm jaggery or any sweetener for at least one year. Add minimal amount than mentioned or prefer sweet-tasting fruits/vegetables like apples, bananas, carrots, etc., or dry fruits like dates or raisins.

Can we roast suji n keep it in an air tight container? Not a very large quantity but for a just a month.
Also can I do same with oats, roast them in advance and keep it. Should I refrigerate these food items after roasting??
gkfooddiary
Yes you can roast oats or sooji and keep them in an airtight container. If the temperature is too hot, you should refrigerate it.

My baby is 14months old.. she is a fussy eater.. she doesn't like any of the solid food.. but doc says start solid.. except ragi porridge she takes nothing..so please help me how can I make her to eat..
gkfooddiary
Give finger foods to baby and eat as a family. They may get interest in food.. Cooked carrots, peas, cut apples, papaya, banana, boiled potatoes salad, crumbled paneer, chopped boiled egg, tiny cut roti/pancakes/dosa are great finger foods. Also don't force the baby to eat. Instead try small meals in frequent intervals. Don't give more cow's milk that may fill up the tummy and hence there will be no room for solids. 200 ml is enough at this stage

perfect guide,, thank you. can you plase mail me the food guide 6 to 11 month. i'm going to start solid food for my baby
Kalyani
Start with veg or fruit purees. Slowly move to soft mashed foods by a month or so. Banana, apple, carrot, pumpkin are the best first foods. Next chikku, papaya, beets, bottle gourd, rice porridge, ragi porridge, etc. one meal a day will do for six months. Avoid salt, sugar, and honey until one year.
