    Ragi Urad Dal Porridge Mix Recipe for Babies

    Homemade ragi urad dal porridge mix powder is calcium, an iron-rich mix made with ragi flour and urad dal. Ragi, aka finger millet, is a superfood for babies & growing kids as its rich in Calcium, iron, fiber, and protein. If you are concerned about your child's weight and development, you must include this healthy millet in their diet! This ragi urad dal porridge is a healthy mix that is ideal for babies, toddlers, kids, pregnant women, and even lactating moms as it is rich in Calcium and Iron!     When to introduce this ragi urad dal mix powder to babies

    This Homemade ragi urad dal powder can be given to babies of age eight months plus after introducing urad dal and ragi flour separate. Once you ruled out allergies, try this homemade ragi urad dal powder. 

    When you start to begin with 1 tablespoon of this powder and check whether the baby shows any allergic reaction, check it for three days, and if the baby is not allergic to it, you can increase the amount gradually. Use this powder to prepare porridge with/without milk, or even you can try ladoos. Here is the porridge recipe of ragi urad dal porridge, which is prepared with this ragi urad dal powder.

    Ingredients

    • Ragi Flour - 1 cup
    • Whole White Urad Dal - ½ cup
    • Whole Cardamom - 2 nos or Cardamom powder -½ tsp
    • Dry ginger - a small piece or Dry ginger powder - ½ tsp

    Instructions

    Preparation

    • Prepare homemade ragi flour from scratch. Check the method for preparing homemade ragi powder here. If using store-bought ragi flour, use organic ones, and skip this step.

    Method

    • Measure all the ingredients using a measuring cup, as mentioned in the ingredients table & keep it ready. Firstly, Dry roast the urad dal in low, medium flame until golden brown. It may take 5 minutes. Set aside to cool down.
    • Now add the roasted urad dal along with dry ginger and cardamom to a blender.
    • Grind everything to a smooth powder. Now Dry roast the ragi flour in low, medium flame until nice aroma comes. It may take 5 minutes. Set aside.
    • Now mix the ground urad dal cardamom dry ginger powder mix to the roasted ragi flour. Sieve the ground urad dal powder with roasted ragi powder using a sieve to collect the smooth powder. If needed, sieve and grind again. Cool it down and store it in an airtight container.

    1.  Prepare homemade sprouted ragi flour from scratch. Check the method for preparing homemade sprouted ragi powder here. You can also use organic store-bought ragi flour. If using store-bought ragi flour, skip this step.

    Method :

    Ragi Urad Dal Porridge Mix RecipeNotes :

    • You can store this homemade ragi urad dal powder in an airtight container at room temperature or keep it in the refrigerator if you live in humid weather. It stays well for 2 to 3 months if handled correctly.
    • Make sure you cool down thoroughly after roasting & blending the ingredients. Otherwise, it will let out moisture.
    • Adding cardamom and dry ginger to this porridge mix ensures easier digestion.
    • Always check with your pediatrician before introducing any new food.
    • Sieve it well to get a fine powder.

      I mean , Can i dry roast ragi millet and grind it together with the roasted urad dal?(instead of using homemade ragi flour)

      Yes you can use ragi millet. The home made ragi powder mentioned in the post is prepared from ragi millet by soaking, washing and sprouting it.

      Hi Kalyani.
      This is seriously a useful blog!! From the time my daughter turned 6 months I have been following only ur site and ur words are receipes are as powerful like how our amma makes. Thank you so much.
      I have a doubt with this porridge, I stay in Blore and can't sun dry can I use ragi millet just washing and drying, roast and then blend instead of sprouting??? And is this suitable for dinner???

      Thanks a lot for your kind words! You can dry it under fan or room light if you couldn't sun dry it..and yes you can skip sprouting part and blend it after drying and roasting..

      Hi kalyani, Seriously ur site is too good. It is helping a lot for first time mother like me.
