Ragi Porridge with Whole Ragi for babies

As I have mentioned earlier, Ragi is a healthy food for babies, rich in calcium & Iron. Check here to know more information about ragi and its health benefits. This ragi porridge is ideal when you introduce ragi (after six months) to the baby, as it's prepared directly from whole ragi seeds by soaking and extracting milk, which is husk free. You can prefer this ragi porridge when you don't have time to make the ragi porridge using homemade sprouted ragi powder. Also, check my Porridge recipe collections for six month plus Babies

Now let's get on to check ragi porridge recipe from the whole ragi.

    Notes :

    • Squeeze out and extract the milk slowly so that you get the milk entirely and no husk.
    • If you forgot to soak the ragi overnight, soak it in hot water for 3 to 4 hours & continue with the remaining steps.
    • Make sure the ragi gets cooked thoroughly.
    • Consistency is purely your choice. Add boiled water to adjust consistency.
    • This porridge becomes thick after cooling down so add boiled water to adjust the consistency if needed.
    • Adding sweetener is your preference.  It tastes good even without that.
    • For toddlers, you can add a pinch of salt. It tastes yum.
    • Always check with your pediatrician before introducing any new food.
    • Offer this porridge plain when you start. Try to avoid jaggery/ palm sugar/ palm jaggery or any sweetener at least till one year, Add minimal amount than mentioned or prefer sweet tasting fruits/vegetables like apple, banana, carrot, etc. or dry fruits like dates or raisins.

When I cooked the ragi milk, a lot of lumps got formed even though I constantly stirred it. Do you know why this might happen?

Hi lovely method . I tried twice. Can you help me by answering these questions ?
      1. Baby slow eater how to ensure the liquid consistency while feeding once cool it becomes like jelly
      2. While cooking as soon as it reaches porridge consistency of the heat ? Or continue to cook till it becomes like jelly ?

It should be like pudding consistency when you switch off the flame. While feeding you can adjust with boiled water to adjust the consistency.

Hi, it's very useful . Thanks. I am having 6 months old boy baby. Which one would be better for him?
Ragi porridge by taking milk from soaked ragi or sprouted ragi powder ?

When you introduce ragi for the first time, prefer this ragi porridge (by soaking the seeds and taking milk). Once baby's tummy is adjusted with this porridge , you can give sprouted ragi flour porridge after few weeks.

      Hi
Thank you for this wonderful recipe. However I have a few points to clarify.
      I have a 7 month old daughter.
1.Please let me know upto how many days can I store extracted ragi milk (before cooking) in the refrigerator?
2.I tried adding wheat as well to this recipe. Ragi and wheat were combined in 2:1 ratio as ragi alone could be a little coldish for the body. Is 2:1 ratio fine?
      Thanks in advance.

      1. Its better if you use within 1-2 hours of preparation..prefer making fresh batch everyday
      2. i never tried adding wheat to this recipe, guess 2:1 ratio should work fine

      Hi kalyani,
I have been giving Ragi poridge for my son by extracting milk from soaked and sprouted ragi.
But from d past two days the poridge is not thickening. It begings to thicken but within a minute it goes back to liquid consistency. What do u think is the reason?

      Thanks
      Anisha
