    Wheat Halwa for Babies

Halwa recipes are usually hit with most of the babies, and there are only the least chances for a baby to say no to Halwa. Agree? I already have Banana Halwa, Ragi Halwa, in my space. This wheat halwa is almost similar to ragi halwa with slight variation in the making. It can be given to babies from 8 months after you introduced apple & wheat to your baby separately.

    Wheat for Baby:

Wheat is rich in protein and makes healthy food for growing babies, which can be introduced to babies after eight months if there is no family history of allergies for wheat. If your baby has a particular Situation, sensitive to a certain food, or one of the parents is allergic to wheat, please check with your pediatrician before introducing wheat.

How to introduce wheat to a baby?

It's best to include wheat in your baby's diet after rice, dal, and basic veggies & fruits. While introducing wheat, introduce plain wheat porridge (made with whole wheat flour) cooked in water, follow three days rule. If your baby does not react to it, continue with wheat and introduce this wheat halwa.

Let's check how to make this easy wheat apple halwa for babies & toddlers.

    Ingredients

    • Whole Wheat Flour - ¼ cup
    • Apple - 1 medium-sized apple
    • Dates - 3 nos
    • Jaggery powder or sugar - 1 tbsp optional
    • Homemade Ghee - 1 tsp
    • Water - ¾ cup

    Instructions

    Preparation

    • Sterilize the bowls and spoons used for feeding your baby in a vessel with hot water for five minutes and keep it immersed in the same vessel until use.

    Method

    • Keep all the ingredients ready. Soak dates in hot water for 5 minutes. Peel the apple with a peeler. Remove the seeds. Chop them into cubes.
    • Puree the apple using a blender along with soaked dates without adding any water. For blending I use
    • Philips Avent Combined Steamer and Blender
    • Take 2 tablespoon of wheat flour in a pan and add ghee. Roast it in low flame for 5 minutes until a nice aroma comes. Take care not to burn the wheat flour.
    • Then add ¾ cup of water to it. Mix it well with a whisk so that no lumps are formed. Cook the wheat in low, medium flame for 5 minutes or until the wheat gets cooked entirely and becomes shiny. Stir it continuously while cooking; otherwise, it may stick to the vessel. Once it is cooked, add pureed apples and jaggery powder (if using).
    • Mix well. Cook it further for three more minutes with continuous stirring. Switch off the flame when it becomes thick. The halwa becomes a little thick after cooling down. So switch off the flame accordingly.

    Notes :

    • For small babies, add more water and give this Halwa as a runny puree. Add formula or breastmilk to adjust consistency.
    • Instead of apples, bananas can be used.
    • For variation, cook this halwa in milk instead of water for older babies.
    • Adding jaggery is purely optional. Add it if the sweetness of apples is not sufficient.
    • Offer this halwa plain when you start. Try to avoid jaggery/ palm sugar/ palm jaggery or any sweetener at least till one year, Add minimal amount than mentioned if needed.
    • I used pure organic jaggery, so added as such if your jaggery has impurities, heat jaggery with water till it immersed level, and strain the jaggery water to remove impurities.
    • Instead of pureeing the apples, you can mash it and add.
    • There is no defined ratio for apples & wheat. You can alter as per your preference and liking.
    • When selecting apples, choose sweet tasting apples. Choose apples that are firm and discolored.
    • Wheat can be introduced to babies after eight months if there is no family history of allergy for wheat.
    • Generally, the apple doesn't cause any allergies, but check for symptoms and stop feeding your baby if you find any.
    • Always check with your pediatrician before introducing any new food.
    • Sugar is not recommended for babies until one year.
    • I used homemade wheat flour; you can use organic wheat flour too.
    • This wheat apple halwa becomes a little thick when cooled down. So switch off the flame accordingly.
