    Pepper Rasam Recipe for Baby

    Pepper Rasam/ Milagu Rasam - mildly spiced rasam/soup which is good for digestion, to build immunity, also works best as a remedy to treat cold and cough in babies and kids! Also it tastes so delicious hence there is a least chance that a child can say a No to Rasam!

    This Pepper rasam is prepared with tomatoes and no tamarind used which makes this perfect for babies and kids, it can be given to babies from 10 months as a mid morning soup or as a lunch with hot mashed rice and dollop of ghee!     Pepper Rasam - South Indian style mildly spiced soup recipe with pepper for babies and kids. Best home remedy to cure cold and cough in babies.

    Ingredients

    • Big Ripe tomato - 1
    • Black pepper - 1 tsp*
    • Cumin seeds/Jeera - 1 tsp
    • Garlic - 3 small cloves
    • Turmeric powder - ¼ tsp
    • Asafoetedia - ⅛ tsp
    • Jaggery - 1 tsp
    • Toor Dal - 2 tbsp
    • Water - 1 cup
    • Salt - as required
    • Sesame Oil/ghee - 1 tsp
    • Mustard Seeds - ¼ tsp
    • Coriander leaves - few optional for garnishing
    • *For more spiciness add 2 teaspoon of pepper

    Instructions

    • Wash, Chop tomatoes, coriander leaves and garlic roughly, Keep it ready along with other ingredients.
    • Wash and cook toor dal with required water in a pressure cooker for 3-5 whistles in medium low flame. Open the cooker once pressure released, ,mash it well with a ladle or spoon. Set aside.
    • Firstly take the chopped tomatoes, pepper corns and cumin seeds in a mixer grinder/ blender. Grind them to a smooth paste by adding half cup of water. Set aside.
    • Heat a pan with a teaspoon of sesame oil or ghee, add mustard seeds and asafoetida . Let it splutter, then add chopped garlic and roast it for a minute.
    • Now add the ground tomato pepper cumin seeds paste along with turmeric powder and required salt. Saute in medium low flame for 5 minutes until streaks of oil starts to appear. Now Add 1 cup of water along with cooked mashed toor dal.
    • Boil it again until frothy in low flame. Don't boil for more time as the rasam will not taste good if boiled for long time. Switch off the flame once done. Add powdered jaggery and coriander leaves. Strain the rasam with a strainer for small babies and serve.

    Serve the pepper rasam as soup or mix with mashed rice and feed your child.

    Notes :
    • Make sure strain the rasam for small babies. You can also serve the top liquid alone.
    • Toor dal should be well cooked and mashed without any whole pieces of dal.
    • Adjust the spiciness of the rasam by adding or reducing the black pepper.
    • Check the spiciness and taste before feeding your baby.
    • Boil the rasam in low medium flame. That is the key to make good tasting rasam.
    • Switch off the flame once it's frothy otherwise it may taste bitter.
    • Always check with your pediatrician before introducing any new food.
    • Salt or sugar is not advisable for babies under one year.

      May i know if we can replace the Thoor Dal with moong dal for a constipated kid?!

      Yes you can replace with moong dal. You can also skip dal and make this rasam
