    Idiyappam for Babies

Idiyappam/string hoppers/rice noodles/sevai is a healthy ,traditional & easily digestible steamed food that can be given to babies from 8 months. Many people make Idiyappam with rice flour but my mom makes Idiyappam in quite different way as it made with freshly ground rice paste. Hence its ideal for babies. Its the basic Idiyappam recipe, will post the other varieties of Idiyappam (wheat Idiyappam, ragi Idiyappam, lemon Idiyappam, masala Idiyappam etc) soon.

What you need before making a Idiyappam
      • Idiyappam press - used to press the dough & make strings with fine wholes
      • Idli pot with steamer plate - used to steam the idiyappam

    Sidedish for Idiyappam:
Idiyappam can be paired with the below options. Choose & mix it with Idiyappam as per your taste and preference.
    • Coconut milk and sugar
    • Grated coconut and sugar
    • Coconut milk & jaggery
    • Milk & sugar or jaggery
    • Stews like egg curry, black chana masala, vegetable kurma , chicken or mutton kurma(preferred for toddlers)

Let's check how to make basic Idiyappam for babies & toddlers.

    Ingredients

    • Parboiled rice  - 1 cup
    • Water - as needed
    • Salt - a pinch not recommended for babies below 1 year
    • Cocount oil - ½ tsp

    Instructions

    Preparation

    • Wash the rice well in running water. Soak it in water for 2 hours. After 2 hours, transfer the rice to a blender & grind it to a smooth paste by adding water. It should be a slightly thick paste neither too thick nor watery.

    Method

    • Heat cocount oil in a pan, add the ground rice paste and fry it in low flame. Fry it until it forms a slightly sticky soft dough. Switch off the flame once done.
    • When it's still warm, knead the dough well with your hands. Make cylindrical shape out of the dough and place it inside the greased idiyappam press.
    • Close the lid of the Idiyappam press and press it slowly above the steamer plate.
    • Steam it for 5-8 minutes. I used my Idli pot for steaming. Steaming time depends on the steamer used. After steaming, carefully transfer to a plate.

    Notes:
    • Use Idiyappam press with fine whole for making this Idiyappam.
    • If you're making Idiyappam in bulk, roast the rice paste in batches.
    • Make sure dough is not dry as pressing will be harder.
    • Evenly layer while pressing the dough that helps in even cooking.
    • Adding salt & sugar is not recommended in baby food unless they turned one year.
    • Check with your baby's doctor before you introduce any new food.
